Everyone slept in. And we needed it. It took us a while to get on the road, but we have no real time table today. The kids ran back and forth up the field between the trailer and the park while Guylaine and I got everything ready. The plan for today was the haunted house in Kensington and to find a beach.
On our way, we passed the Toy Factory, a store with a lot of home made wooden games, puzzles and toys mixed with other toys. They have a workshop right in the back of the storeand you can go watch them work. We grabbed a few games and puzzles for the kids and headed off.
The towns are all very close here, but the roads are narrow and the landscape is all rolling farmland. It really is beautiful.
We got to the haunted mansion and it even looked haunted from the outside. With the kids sitting on the step for a picture, a window on the third floor opened up with a woman hanging out asking us to help her escape. The kids were frozen. From that point on, the pretty frightened. Time to go in.
The $45 price tag seemed a bit steep at first, but after steping into the first room, we could tell we were going to get our money`s worth. It was creepy. And dark. With seemingly no way out of the first room, someone moved forward setting off a secret door behind the bookcase. I was told I was leading the way into the pitch black, so off I went. The best feature our new camera has is if you set it on automatic, it will fire the flash to set the autofocus – instant flashlight. The house was creepy. Some of it was scary, but for the most part it was just creepy. The layout of the house and the 70`s carpet, wallpaper, and cabinets, complete with stained carpet let us know that this was probably someone`s house at some point in the past. It was creepy. After touring the top three floor, we were led down to the basement, which had been converted to early London and the streets roamed by Jack-the-ripper. We never met up with old Jack, but the way they had it laid out was very impressive. To say Sam, William and Xavier were scared was an understatement. Sam always ats tough, but you could tell he was sticking pretty close. William made no secret of his fear by repeatingly asking if we could take one of the fire exits everytime we passed one. And Xavier, I picked him up to go through the Vortex which was a gangplank through a giant spinning cylinder that made it feel like the whole room was spinning, and he was shaking so hard I thought I was going to drop him.
The stairs from the basement led out to a less then scary beautifully manicured garden, complete with waterfall, Eiffel tower and Japanese fish pond. From there they had a small amusement park set up for the kids with rides and a petting zoo. They had a cage of kittens which we couldn`t get Sam, William and Xavier away from. Guylaine, Alex and Katrina decided to go back into the house for another tour and said it was just as scary the second time, especially the bloodied woman chasing them with an axe. I stayed outside with the boys and the kittens.
We took off from there feeling pretty good about our day so far. William says he`s never going to a haunted house again. We decided to try to find a beach. On the way, we passed the birthplace of L.M. Montgomery, author of the infamous Anne of Green Gables. We stopped to take pictures for my sister, but passed on paying the $15 or so it would cost us to go visit the 600 square foot…room. Sorry Di.
We kept going on highway 6 hoping to make our way to a beach. Guylaine had been talking about this Cows ice cream thing since we got here. She had seen it on the side of the road. Turns out it`s been voted Canada`s best ice cream. We saw the Cavendish Boardwalk on the side of the road so we pulled in and sure enough, there was a cows. We decided to treat ourselves. The ice cream was good, but Guylaine and I have both had better. Oh well. We`re on holidays and we hadn`t spent a lot so it was worth the treat. We walked along the boardwalk into the little shops. I bought a new hat and Guylaine got a new purse. The last shop at the end was called Costal Culture and had all kinds of neat things. We finally found some hot air balloon whirly-gigs for the trailer. We`ve been looking all summer since we had seen one on a trailer in Old Orhard Beach. Turns out Will and Kate like the shop too, as they had been there only a few weeks before on their cross Canada tour.
We got back in the car and kept driving. We found the Green Gables Village and decided to pull in to check it out. It was already closed. There was one guy who worked there and he told us it was $75 for a family to get in. Guylaine took a bunch of pictures, but I don`t think we`ll be back.
We drove down highway 6 a little more. Our map said the Cavendish beach was somewhere along here, but it was a tourist map with just the highlights and very little usefull information like directions. We saw some tour bus ahead on the side of the road, but it turns out they had just stopped to check out bales of hay. Not a very exciting tour (unless you really like hay I guess). We turned back and drove past the visitors centre and there we found the enterance to Cavendish Provincial Park.
Because the booth was just about to close, they didn’t charge us for access. We drove for a bit and then stopped at what looked like beach access. We walked down and the rockes were all smooth. Shaped and smoothed by the wind and the water it was really something. And red. All the rocks and most of the sand are red. Guylaine went back to the truck to get the kids swim suits. With no one around, they changed right on the beach. They collected rocks and sand, shells and hermit crabs. When the sun had gone down enough, it started getting cool. It was time to go back to the truck. On the way Xavier wiped out and was full of red sand. We were too far from the water, and the shore here made it impossible to get to the water now, so we had no choice but to use the 4L jug of drinking water we keep in the truck. After rinsing him off, we just threw a diaper and t-shirt on him and put him in his seat. Then he started choking on his water, to the point where he started throwing up. We had to clean him again. We finally got on the road by 7:45.
We kept driving in the park road and came across some beautiful sites. We even came across a small fox who kept getting closer every time he heard my camera click. I got out to take a picture and this couple started talking to me. They were from Collingwood. We got back on the road and saw another fox. We sure have seen a lot of animals this summer.
We stopped at a store to pick up essentials and headed back to the campsite. We hung up the hot air balloons and I cooked hamburgers and made a fire while Guylaine gave everyone a shower. The kids all came out for the fire, and we decided to eat outside. It was a nice relaxing evening. We let the fire die, then we got the kids to bed and Guylaine and I played some cards.
We find this campsite is really relaxing and the location is great. I think we may even stay an extra day.
