The idea was to get up early and get to the beach for low
tide at 9:20 for one more crab grabbin’ adventure. The fact I left my phone,
which is our clock on the truck, didn’t help. Still, Guylaine managed to get us
all up and we managed to get ready in record time and get to the beach by about
10:00. The tide had already started coming back in, but we tried to make it out
to the farthest point anyways. Once the water got to waist level, Guylaine and
me and Xavier turned back. We figured we could make it there, but the tide was
oming in so fast we weren’t sure if we could make it back. Xavier would have to
swim, and I had my camera. The kids had already gone ahead and were getting
further and further, so we really had no choice but to go and get them.
Luckily, they came back almost right away and we headed back through the water.
It was unbelievable how strong the current was. My legs hurt after getting
through. The kids played in the sand, finding crabs, and splashing through the
water. Then they wanted to play on the rocks, but with the tide out, the rocks
were quite high. Then after a while, a crowd started to gather. It seems a
family had been trying to get back from where we were earlier, but the strong
current and deeper water swept them past the rocks and into the river leading
inland which was now flowing rapidly with the incoming tide. Some people on the
rocks formed a chain and pulled them all out safely. Shortly after that, 3 more
people got caught trying to cross the river to the beach on the otherside and
could outswim the current. They had to be rescued by boat before heading inland
to the Scarborough Marsh. Unbelievable.
We came home after that and everybody grabbed a shower and
we made a big brunch outside. Then we finally made the trip to WalMart we’d
been putting off for 2 days, because we didn’t have a drop of water left. We
got out of there and brought the supplies back to the trailer then decided to
head downtown for a quick look-see before heading out tomorrow. The kids really
wanted to go back to the beach one more time, so we drove through downtown and
went for a walk at the south end of the beach. Funny thing is, Xavier doesn’t
understand what just a walk means and was covered in sand and knee deep in the
water with his pants on within 10 minutes of hitting the beach, the tide was
heading back out now, and the boys ran ahead once again looking for critters.
But they all got wet. Guylaine stripped the 3 younger ones down to their undies
and they went right into the water. There was no way Alex was going on a public
beach in his undies, so he decided to stay a bit dryer.
Even though this end of the beach is sooooo much cleaner
then the other end, the kids still needed some ‘maintenance’ when we got home.
I rearranged the back of the truck and packed what I could. We cleaned up a bit
inside and put away what we don’t need for the drive tomorrow. Sam helped me
make hotdogs and the kids ate. Guylaine taught them the culinary masterpiece of
sprayable cheese on ritz crackers.
After supper it was a quick cleanup and off to bed. Alex and
Katrina got into Norbit and were laughing so hard they had to shut it off so
the others could sleep.
A late night for them, but we’re in the truck most of the
day tomorrow so….oh well.
